150 iPhone Duo Demo Units in One Apple Store: Confidence or Fear?

Apple Fifth Avenue will have 150+ iPhone Duo demo units and phones without tethers. A wow effect, but in my opinion it also shows Apple may be worried about sales.

Key takeaways

  • According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple Fifth Avenue in New York will have more than 150 iPhone Duo demo units, Apple Park Visitor Center nearly 100, and big stores 30 to 40 each.
  • Apple also plans untethered iPhone Duo demo units, a new MagSafe stand and a display where the phone opens and closes by itself. Pre-orders start October 16, sales October 23.
  • My view: it is a wow effect and great marketing, but in my opinion such a huge push also shows Apple may be worried about sales at $1,999.

iPhone Duo arrives in about two weeks, and according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, as reported by 9to5Mac, Apple is preparing a retail push like we have not seen in a long time. Apple Fifth Avenue in New York is expected to have more than 150 iPhone Duo units across demo stations and fixtures. The Apple Park Visitor Center will have nearly 100. Stores like Michigan Avenue in Chicago, The Grove in Los Angeles and the Upper West Side in Manhattan will get roughly 30 to 40 each. Even smaller stores will have around 20, and the phone comes in only two colors.

On top of that: a new MagSafe stand that holds an unfolded iPhone Duo next to two regular iPhones, demo units without a security tether along the sides of stores, and a new fixture where the iPhone Duo opens and closes by itself, so it is “impossible to miss” when you walk in.

150 iPhone Duo demo units on Fifth Avenue

I would say Apple knows that Fifth Avenue will have the most people who want to see the iPhone Duo live. You need that many units so everyone can touch it, and nobody has to wait for two demo phones.

But at the same time, I think Apple may be worried about how many people will pre-order it. And when I look at the advertising campaign being prepared for the launch day, I think Apple has not done such a big push for an iPhone in a long time.

Confidence or fear?

Here it is what I said. In my opinion, it is more fear. Apple sees that there are not so many people who want to give that much money for a phone, so it makes people come in, touch it, and then it sells better. Or maybe it is the opposite: even if Apple expects fewer orders, it is sure that when more people can touch it, it may sell on the emotions of a new model.

I can say one thing for sure: if it is as beautiful in real life as in the photos and videos on the internet, the phone will be a success. Nobody can deny that it looks really futuristic and beautiful, with nicely made details. But the most important question stays. Will it look the same in person? Or will we find out that the middle crease is visible and you can feel it, and that only in the video the matte display creates the wow effect? I am really curious myself. But I think when people touch it, there is a big chance it will sell more. Only time will tell.

The first thing I will check: the hinge

The hinge. I am really curious whether it is true or a myth that you almost cannot see it. Because as we know from the competition, the hinge always looks like the phone fell and got deformed in that spot. I want to see how the iPhone Duo looks live. I already wrote that I will go and hold it in the store.

Demo units without a tether: courage or risk?

It is more courage, so people can not only touch it but understand how the phone works in different positions. The tether makes that test really unpleasant, and in some moments impossible. There is a risk with who walks into the store. But Apple has it so well made that even if somebody is brave enough to take one, as soon as they walk out of the store, it is just a dummy, and nothing can be done with that phone.

A phone that opens and closes by itself

I will say it straight: wow effect, and at the same time nice marketing. When it is in Apple’s windows, opening and closing by itself, and you see how nice the phone looks, it means Apple is sure about this model. It knows it now just needs a nice wrapper for marketing, and the phone will start selling nicely.

“Hard to buy”? I do not believe it

If it were really that hard to buy, they would not let everyone touch it. Let us be honest, that is an old marketing hook, when we say demand is limited or it is hard to buy. I do not really believe it. If you know it is hard to buy, you do not do such crazy strong marketing and put out so many phones without a tether in stores. I do not believe it.

In my opinion, Apple rather knows that if it does not do this, sales could drop. And when we read the latest news about how the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are selling, we know the company already has a problem. So it must quickly start promoting the iPhone Duo to the maximum, to save that drop.

More show than phone?

The “Hello” greeting, in my opinion, is nonsense that only real fans will appreciate. Other people turn the phone on and off in the store maybe once, and that is it. Especially when it works only in the store itself. It is just some farce they came up with, so people talk about them more.

Samsung never did a show like this

To be honest, I already forgot when Apple last did such a show for a new phone. I am saying it is not normal, and it rather pushes me to think that something is not good with the sales of the new phones. Otherwise Apple would not launch such a PR campaign. But we will see. Either it is PR against a drop, or it is just a show to say how big they are and bulletproof in whatever they do. Either way, the marketers did their job really cleverly this time.

And Samsung is behind here too. I do not like any of the Folds at all. The hinge is visible from space, and you can feel the dip. That is madness.

My advice if you go and try it

Share as much as possible, everywhere, what feeling you had. Or whether, after you had it in your hands, you walked out of the Apple Store with it right away. That is what I am curious about: will this help Apple sell more, or not?

Our Take

150 demo units, phones without tethers and a Duo that opens by itself. In my opinion, that is a huge wow effect and great marketing.

But such a push for one phone also tells me Apple may be worried about $1,999 sales after the iPhone 18 Pro.

I will go and check the hinge myself. If you go, tell everyone what you felt.
