iPhone Duo Jailbroken on Day One. I’m Not Worried at All

The iPhone Duo was jailbroken hours after launch. Everyone is panicking. For me, the iPhone is still the safest phone in the world for a normal person.

Key takeaways

  • Hours after the iPhone Duo went on sale, the security firm Calif showed it jailbroken on iOS 27.1, with icons bouncing around the screen and an anime character added. A week earlier it showed an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 18 Pro.
  • Calif says it reported the bugs to Apple, “most” will be fixed in iOS 27.2, AI helped with the work, and the tool will not be released to the public.
  • My view: everyone is panicking, and I am not worried at all. For a normal user, the iPhone is still the safest phone in the world.

On October 23, just hours after the iPhone Duo went on sale, the security firm Calif posted a video of an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1 that had been jailbroken. In the demo, icons and widgets bounce around the home screen and an anime character sits on the display. Researcher Huy Nguyen also showed access to the system /var folder through a file explorer, a place normal users never reach.

A week earlier, the same group showed an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0.1: the phone rebooted, and full root access stayed. Calif’s Stefan Esser told the German site Heise that the bugs have already been reported to Apple or will be soon, that “most” of them will be fixed in the upcoming iOS 27.2, and that AI helped in developing the jailbreak, without saying how. The tool will not be released to end users. Apple has not commented.

A crack and a jailbreak are two different things

Day one of the Duo: a cracked screen, a repair manual without parts, and now a jailbreak. On the forums people joke “cracked n’ hacked.” But let’s not throw everything into one bag. The crack is about the hardware and the hinge. The jailbreak is about bugs in iOS. They have nothing to do with each other, and the repair manual has nothing to do with it either.

Let’s start with who even needs a jailbreak. My guess is that not even one percent of iPhone users ever jailbreak their phone. The normal user probably does not even know what it is for. It is a thing for hackers and technical enthusiasts, and sometimes for people whose intentions are not entirely honest. I say this without wanting to offend anyone.

The safest phone for a normal person

Apple sells the iPhone as the safest phone. Does a jailbreak on day one change that for me? No. Whoever says the iPhone now has weak security, I don’t agree. For a normal person who never thinks about a jailbreak, it is the safest phone in the world, and for that I will always praise Apple.

When I use Apple technology, the first thing I like, and what makes me feel the most safe, is exactly this: I know my data is safer than with gadgets from other companies. Apple has its weak spots, and I write about them often. Here, it deserves praise.

Bouncing icons and a big wow effect

Everyone on the internet and on the forums now talks about AI and hackers with so much fear, as if everyone can suddenly hack. But hackers were always here. And AI can help Apple fix bugs just as fast. You can read what I wrote about an AI model that hacked a government site. This is the same story from the other side: AI speeds up both attack and defense.

They showed one silly thing, bouncing icons, how they hacked an iPhone on launch day, and everyone makes a wow effect out of it, as if it is already bad. Why don’t people think with their heads about how and why it happened? A day-one jailbreak has been rare in recent years, which is exactly why it made headlines. Hackers always try to break every new iPhone. This time they were just fast. That does not make the iPhone dangerous.

A security firm needs advertising

Calif is a security firm, and it needs to advertise itself somehow. And as we know well, the best advertising for any company is to connect itself with Apple, to dirty Apple in any way, or to show some weak spots. So what can I say? The advertising worked.

But to be fair, they also showed that they play fair. They did not release the tool to the public, and the bugs go to Apple. That is how a serious security test should look. For me, it only proves that we have nothing to fear, and that Apple stays number one in protecting data.

Should you worry about iOS 27.2?

One important thing, so it is not misunderstood. The bugs Calif used are not only in jailbroken phones. They are in iOS 27.1 on every iPhone, and a jailbreak is just one way to use them. In theory, an attacker could use the same holes, for example through a malicious app. That is why the fix in iOS 27.2 matters for everyone, so install it when it comes.

But right now, the risk for a normal person is minimal. The tool is not public, Apple knows about the bugs, and the fix is on the way. The people who should really think twice are those who jailbreak on purpose. When you jailbreak, you turn off the protections yourself, and you open the door for someone clever to get into your phone. That I call nonsense.

Nothing a normal user needs

Years ago, jailbreaking brought features that Apple later copied, like widgets on the home screen and a control center. Today I don’t know what more a normal user needs than what Apple gives us. It is hard to believe you need something more. I have everything I need and everything I work with, and I have never thought about a jailbreak. What for? Only so my data goes God knows where, and Apple can no longer protect us.

Would I jailbreak a $2,000 phone?

God, no. And it is not about the price of the phone. I never did it on a single phone, and I never felt the need. In my opinion, you have to know a lot about what Apple does not allow before you even try a jailbreak, and for a normal person it brings more risk than benefit.

One reader wrote that Apple may have left the bug on purpose, to get real-world feedback for its first foldable. It is possible, but I don’t see proof of it. The point is simpler: hackers go after every new model, and this time it took hours. Install iOS 27.2 when it arrives, don’t jailbreak, and you can sleep well.

Our Take

The iPhone Duo was jailbroken hours after launch, with bouncing icons and an anime character. Everyone makes a wow effect out of it. I am not worried at all: the tool is not public, the bugs went to Apple, and iOS 27.2 will fix most of them.

For a normal person, the iPhone is still the safest phone in the world. Install the update, don’t jailbreak, and keep your data where Apple can protect it.
