Key takeaways

  • My view: for me, iPhone Air is one of the sexiest phones on the market. I wait for iPhone Air 2, and it could replace my iPhone 17 Pro. Only the battery and the price worry me.

Apple is working on iPhone Air 2. As summed up by 9to5Mac, it could fix the biggest weaknesses of the first model: a second camera, a bigger battery, the A20 Pro chip and better cooling. But it will not come this fall. According to Bloomberg, iPhone Air 2 is now planned for spring 2027, together with the base iPhone 18.

Under every article about the iPhone Air, I read the same comments: nobody bought it, it is a flop, give us a bigger battery, bring back the mini. I will say it straight: I am the person who thinks the opposite.

What we know about iPhone Air 2

According to Bloomberg and The Information, iPhone Air 2 should get a second camera on the back. Bloomberg says it will be an ultra-wide camera, not a telephoto. The chip moves from the A19 Pro to the A20 Pro, Apple’s first 2-nanometer iPhone chip. A supply chain leak points to a 3,500mAh battery, up from 3,149mAh, so more than 10% bigger. And The Information reports a vapor chamber for cooling, like on the iPhone 17 Pro.

The Information reported last November that Apple had taken the next iPhone Air off the schedule because of weaker sales than expected. Later it said the phone was not canceled, just moved.

“Nobody bought it.” I take that with a grain of salt

A lot of people say they would never buy it. But I take that with reserve. When people write that they do not like it, or that they will not buy it, I think it is just about taste. Who likes what. Somebody says it is a flop.

And I am exactly the person who says iPhone Air is one of the sexiest phones on the market, if I can say it like that. I am really waiting for the second version, and it will probably be the phone that replaces my iPhone 17 Pro.

I really wanted the first generation. But you know it: never buy anything that comes out as a first generation. Still, every time I am in an Apple Store or a tech shop where it is sold, there is not a single time I do not go and take it in my hands. I like it so much that I say it is a pity the Air line is not on the market longer. Until now, I said iPhone X was the most beautiful iPhone. Now, for me, it is the Air. Thin, thin bezels, they do not bother me at all. One camera? It does not bother me. Only the battery.

Apple cut it down on purpose? I do not think so

Some readers think Apple cut the first Air down on purpose, so the second one looks like a big jump. I would not say that. In my taste, I would even recommend Apple to leave it as it is. Maybe a bigger battery. But I do not agree that they cut it down.

People, wake up. This is the Air line. It is not Pro, and it is not the regular iPhone. If you want the phone to look only one micron thinner than the regular iPhone, then it is not an Air anymore. It is just another modification of the normal iPhone. If you need more cameras, Apple gave you a choice. In a thin body, it cannot give you all those things. It is a stylish, sexy phone, and that is why it has one camera and eSIM. Otherwise it would need a thicker body, and it would not be that thin. You want a thin phone, and at the same time everything the iPhone Pro has? That does not fit.

The battery: the one complaint I sign

The only thing I sign is the truth about the battery. Today, even 3,500mAh is terribly little. But when you buy an Air, you know why. The people who buy these iPhones are people with aesthetic taste. I always said that. A regular user wants more cameras, more battery and a lot of other things the Air does not have. But when you take the Air in your hand, you think this is really maybe the most stylish phone on the market.

Maybe the emotions are playing in me now when I write about it. And I am probably one of not many people who really wait so much for iPhone Air 2.

A second camera? I am afraid it will ruin the design

Here I am afraid. If they add a second camera, it will already be something thicker. I would leave it as it is, because I think it will not be as perfect as it is now. This phone is made like every Air line: MacBook Air, iPad Air. They were always the most designed, almost the most beautiful things from Apple.

We will see how they deal with it. Even if they do not add the second camera and do not change the design, it will not bother me at all. Just make a bigger battery. I think it will not have the success of the regular iPhone, but there are definitely people who will buy it and love stylish things like the iPhone Air. I know a lot of people will not agree with me now. But it is my taste, and your comments will not change it.

The A20 Pro chip: an excellent marketing move

Why not? When you take it all together, it will be one of the fastest phones on the market and, at the same time, one of the fastest and most beautiful phones Apple has. And that can raise the demand for this phone.

In my opinion, they thought it through well: we do not have room for a second camera, but we give you the power the Pro has. That is an excellent marketing move, and honestly the best thing that can happen to the Air. A blogger who needs more cameras will definitely not buy it. But for God’s sake, it looks so fascinating that I am waiting for the second version too much. I just hope I will not be disappointed.

Why spring 2027 and not September?

As I think, from now on the fall presentation, before Christmas, when there is the biggest demand on the market, will be only for the expensive models: the Pro versions and the iPhone Duo. If everything comes out together like now, Apple probably knows the Pro does not have as big a demand as it had until now. We already saw the iPhone 18 Pro production cut. So Apple has to save it somehow, and it chose this way.

Why I bought the 17 Pro and not the Air

Believe it or not: if the Air were now, next to the 17 Pro, a second generation and as good as the first, I would definitely buy the Air. That is sure. But I am afraid to buy the first generation from Apple. It always has the most bugs, so I always wait. That is the only reason I did not buy the Air right away.

A case kills the thinness? Not for me

Today there are all kinds of cases where the thinness can stay, even in a case. You just have to find a nice one, and that is not so hard anymore. And I am exactly the person who has no screen protector and no case. I like the phone the way it is, even if after a few months it sometimes looks a bit strange and all smudged. That is something I can live with. I do not buy a phone and then not even know how it looks without a case.

The price could kill my joy

And here my joy will probably burst, because we meet on one thing. What Apple does with prices now is completely outrageous, in my opinion. I feel it just shoots by eye and adds hundreds of dollars on top. I wrote about it with the $799 iPad mini. That is one more reason that could stop me from buying even the second generation.

I hope I will be happy, that this will not work for them, and that they put the price back down and are not so greedy, only thinking about how to make money on us. But maybe not. We will see.

Bring back the mini? I do not believe it

I really do not believe it. Everyone wrote the same before iPhone 12 mini came out, and what happened? That was a real flop, not the Air. Almost nobody bought that phone, even if it was small and you could use it with one hand.

Today we have so many apps that do not fit, and we want even bigger displays. In my opinion, people who talk about the mini have some longing for the old. And when you bring the old back, you will see. Somebody goes to the store, sees the mini, and next to it the base iPhone. He will definitely leave with the base one, because he will say: why do I need that small display?

Our Take

Everyone calls the iPhone Air a flop. For me, it is one of the sexiest phones on the market, and iPhone Air 2 could replace my iPhone 17 Pro.

The A20 Pro chip is a smart move. A second camera worries me, because the Air must stay an Air. The battery must grow.

But if Apple adds hundreds of dollars to the price again, even I may say no.
