iPhone Duo Orders Moving Up? Two Posts on X Are Not News

9to5Mac says some iPhone Duo orders now ship earlier, based on posts on X. Apple confirmed nothing. In my opinion, a few social posts are not news.

Key takeaways

  • 9to5Mac reports that some iPhone Duo pre-orders, mostly in Japan, now show earlier delivery dates, in one case moved from December to launch day, October 23. The report is based on posts on X. Apple has not commented, and 9to5Mac says the new dates could be errors.
  • A day after Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman called the Duo pre-orders “a major mistake,” another 9to5Mac writer, Ben Lovejoy, calls the long waits “a mixed blessing” that also feeds the hype.
  • My view: in my opinion, a few posts on social media are not news. I stay skeptical until we see real numbers. If the earlier dates are true, it only shows again that greed won and the show matters more than us.

iPhone Duo pre-orders opened on October 16 in more than 70 countries, and within minutes delivery estimates slipped to around January 25, 2027. Now 9to5Mac reports that some orders are getting earlier dates. The examples come mostly from Japan, where one buyer posted on X that his December date changed to October 23, launch day. A 9to5Mac staffer collected a few more screenshots.

According to 9to5Mac, the earlier dates so far seem limited to orders made directly with Apple. Apple has not commented, and the site itself says the new estimates could turn out to be errors that get reverted. Earlier, China’s Securities Times reported that Apple raised Duo orders by about 30%, and Australia’s EFTM noted that some retailers and carriers there promise the Duo weeks earlier than Apple’s own store.

Two posts on X are not news

Let me get this straight. A whole article built on a post or two on a social network, something nobody can even verify, true or not. In my opinion, that is how it works now: every little thing anyone sees on the internet becomes a headline.

Maybe I am wrong and there are many more cases. But in my opinion, these are a few cases, and maybe on Apple’s side it is just a technical glitch. The people who live from writing about Apple don’t know what to write anymore, so they make hype out of everything. I am curious: when problems with the Duo start, or demand drops, will they write about it with the same excitement?

Or it really is the good old Apple psychology we have known for years: show the worst date first, then “surprise” people. But right now I am a skeptic, and I believe they got into some real trouble with production.

Gurman or Lovejoy? Neither, in my opinion

Yesterday Gurman said Apple made a major mistake with Duo pre-orders, and I said it was not a mistake, it was greed. Today Ben Lovejoy at 9to5Mac says it is “a mixed blessing” for Apple, annoying for customers, but good for the hype.

I will say even more than greed. Apple is rushing far too much with the Duo, so the new CEO can show how genius he is. In reality, it shows how unpredictable Apple is, and that it only rushes into problems.

And about delivery, I really don’t believe everyone will suddenly get their Duo earlier. I don’t remember Apple ever pushing pre-orders out by three months like this. And if it turns out the earlier dates are true, then greed won this time, and it shows what Apple really is in the last year: we don’t matter anymore, only the show does. On the other side, I understand business. They want to stay number one in everything.

Why Japan? And why not the home market?

Why Japan? Or is it only speculation? When at home, in the U.S., Apple has more than 150 Duo units in one store just for demos, why not put at least those on sale earlier? I don’t understand it. I wrote that Apple Stores tell people not to come without a pre-order. 150 phones to look at, zero to buy.

And why Japan? I think it is only an error, nothing more. I can’t believe 9to5Mac jumped on it. Or maybe Apple itself wanted this story out. Even though people talk about them every day, maybe it is still not enough for them.

Numbers don’t lie

I can’t wait until all this settles and we learn what the real demand is. Numbers don’t lie. So only a little time is left until we learn maybe the biggest secret of 2026: how big a success the iPhone Duo really is.

The reader who is happy to wait

The top comment under Lovejoy’s article comes from a reader who is happy his date got pushed: the end of the year is busy anyway, he will see what early buyers say, and if they don’t like it, he simply cancels.

In my opinion, there will be more and more people like that, with all the uncertainty that shows up on the internet now. Maybe in the end the ones whose orders moved to 2027 will be happy. But I don’t say that with certainty. Maybe Apple will manage the hinge at scale after all. As I said, time will tell. Or we will learn right away that the Duo is not that good, and more than half of the pre-orders fall away. That can happen too.

A patch, or just speculation?

Please. It is only speculation. Apple confirmed nothing. If Apple delivered the Duo faster to everyone who pre-ordered, that would be nice. But I am skeptical.

And this is also a problem of journalists. They see something on the internet and make big news out of it, only to pull more attention to themselves. That is how I see it.
